HYDRO/POWER GENERATION

Refurbishing the hydraulic gates and embedded components of the water control structures at the Churchill Falls Generating Station.
Sunny Corner also worked with Andritz Hydro on turbine refurbishment across multiple phases, providing labor and supervision including millwrights, electricians, pipefitters, laborers, and carpenters.

This project involved the removal and replacement of the world’s largest diameter rubber dam bladder at the Nepisiguit Falls Generating Station. To facilitate this operation, a large earthen cofferdam was constructed upstream of the work area to enable the dewatering of the site, ensuring a safe environment for both workers and equipment. The project was carried out with strict adherence to environmental guidelines.
Once the work area was dewatered and leveled, a 200-ton crane was utilized to perform a single lift to remove the 60,000 lb bridge that spanned over the existing rubber bladder. Following the bridge removal, tandem lifts were carried out using a 150-ton crane and a 100-ton crane to remove the old bladder and install the new one, each weighing approximately 60,000 lbs. Prior to the bladder installation, all necessary concrete repairs to the existing spillway were completed.

The construction of a new substation for NB Power at the Houlton, ME border crossing. This project was one of three substation projects performed for NB Power, encompassing all aspects of excavation, civil engineering, structural work, and electrical installations. This project involved the complete development of the substation, including site preparation, foundational construction, and the installation of necessary electrical infrastructure to support seamless power distribution.

OIL and GAS

The project involved safely dismantling and lowering a multi-section stack using a crane. The process was completed in the following stages:
Top Section Removal (72'):
Support the top 72' section of the stack with the crane.
Perform a cold cut to free the top section.
Lower the top section, estimated weight: 23,300 lbs.
The center of gravity approximately 27' from the bottom of the section.
Middle Section Removal (70'):
Support the middle 70' section of the stack with the crane.
Perform a cold cut to free the middle section.
Lower the middle section, estimated weight: 39,800 lbs.
The center of gravity approximately 34' from the bottom of the section.
Lower Section Removal (58'):
Confirm that the grounding cable and electrical wiring have been disconnected.
Disconnect the bottom ladder from the foundation.
Support the lower 58' section of the stack with the crane.
Remove anchor bolt nuts and lift the bottom section free.
Lower the bottom section, estimated weight: 51,200 lbs.
The center of gravity approximately 25' from the underside of the steel.
This operation required careful coordination and safety measures to handle the sections based on their respective weights and centers of gravity.

MINING

Construction of a new Iron Ore Processing Plant, with scope encompassing piping, mechanical, and structural steel installation. This project also included the setup of primary and secondary sizing crushing units, along with the associated material handling equipment.
Our team brought specialized expertise to the challenges of working in Northern Labrador, located on the Quebec/Labrador border. We successfully managed the unique aspects of this remote site, including the recruitment and retention of skilled personnel, procurement of materials, logistics coordination, and adapting to the region’s extreme weather conditions to ensure project success.

Complete installation of mechanical equipment, structural steel and modifications, civil work, piping, fire-protection, electrical, instrumentation and insulation.
The structural scope consisted of the installation of concrete and grout, completion of red line drawings on existing structural steel and platforms and installation of new structural.
Piping scope consisted of completion of steam supply and condensate lines, inst./plant air, seal and gland water, installation and bonding of FRP acid and product lines, glycol piping, fire suppression and safety shower and eyewash stations.
Electrical scope consisted of power and control cables, tray and conduit, lighting and small power, grounding and bonding, heat tracing and high voltage DC buss.
Instrumentation scope consisted of installation of instruments, tubing, control and communication cable.
The mechanical scope of work included installation of two chain conveyors, two overhead cranes, a stripping machine and the Electro Winning Cells. New installation of heat exchangers, ducting for HVAC units, insulation on piping and duct, jib cranes, tanks, agitators, pumps, scales and a material handling robot.
This scope of work was successfully completed for the customer in a short 6-month timeline.

PULP and PAPER

As part of an overall Mill upgrade, IPP installed a new White Liquor Plant. One of the first RFPs to be executed as part of the new White Liquor Plant project was the Main Process & Auxiliary Equipment Installation project for this new plant. This particular project involved the installation of 14 pieces of mechanical equipment. The largest piece of equipment to be installed is the White Liquor Pressure Disc Filter with a weight of 40,175kg.
In preparation of the lift of the Filter Press, a crew of 4-6 Pipefitters set up channel rails on existing steel located on the roof of the new White Liquor Plant. Once completed, the Disc Filter was lifted onto the steel working with Irving Equipment's 500ton Hydraulic crane. During this time, a separate contractor was installing new lifting frame steel which was to be used for lifting the Disc Filter across and down through the roof of the new White Liquor Plant.
With the lifting frame steel complete, our crew set up (2) 30ton pneumatic chain hoists onto the steel and then moved the Filter Disc across the roof and down through the roof onto the concrete support pedestals for the Disc Filter.

The scope of work involved the supply, fabrication, and on-site installation of piping and utility modules, which connected the existing mill to the new mill expansion building. This expansion housed the pulp machines and other related equipment, ensuring seamless integration between the two facilities.

MAINTENANCE/OUTAGE WORK

New Brunswick Power operates a coal-fired power plant in Belledune, New Brunswick, with Sunny Corner Enterprises Inc. managing the maintenance contract for the site. This includes routine maintenance and the annual plant outage.
The outage lasted for 9 weeks and involved multiple trades including Boilermakers, Millwrights, and Pipefitters. In total, approximately 180,000 hours of direct labour were used, with 20% of the labour from Boilermakers and 20% from Millwrights, focusing on critical systems. Peak workforce numbers included 90 Boilermakers and 70 Millwrights, supplied through Sunny Corner Enterprises' strong relationships with local unions.
Boiler work included tube repairs, waterwall overlays, burner rebuilds, and the inspection and repair of the deaerator, steam drum, and mud drum. Additional tasks included maintenance and replacement of the expansion joints in the precipitator, as well as work on the coal handling system. The Turbine generator was overhauled in line with its service cycle, and general tank repairs and nozzle replacements were also completed.

Koch Fertilizer operates an ammonia processing plant in Brandon, MB. Sunny Corner Enterprises was engaged to plan work packages in preparation to execute work required for their scheduled Maintenance Turnaround. Planning was completed for over 375 workpackages 3 months prior to the planned outage start date. At this time our execution team mobilized to site in preparation for trades to arrive. Field Installation Work Packages (FIWPs) were created and the prep work for the the outage began. Installation of scaffold and the prefabrication of pipe were advanced as much as possible in preparation for the outage. Due to operational issues at the plant, the outage was moved ahead appoximately 5 days. Our team transitioned rapidly from planning to execution, successfully bringing 250 trades onboard to execute the work.

(SCEI) has maintained a strong and reliable partnership with Twin Rivers Paper Mill since 2010, during which time the company has consistently handled the mill's bi-annual shutdowns. These shutdowns, typically occurring in the spring and fall, range from 2 to 7 days in duration and involve a wide variety of tasks across different sections of the mill. Each shutdown includes essential maintenance, repairs, and upgrades, ensuring all systems are operating at peak efficiency. The diverse scope of work spans multiple mill departments, showcasing SCEI's versatility and expertise in managing critical shutdown periods while minimizing downtime. This ongoing collaboration has allowed both companies to develop a deep understanding of each other’s operations, resulting in smooth and efficient shutdowns year after year.
